Mickey Mantle
"Fill in any figure you want for that boy. Whatever the figure, it's a deal."
Branch Rickey on seeing Mickey Mantle in spring 1951. He took a checkbook out of his pocket, ripped out a check, signed his name, and handed it to co-owner Dan Topping who was seated next to him.

Thought For The Day
The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.

Poem For The Day
Courage must come from the soul within,
The man must furnish the will to win.
So figure it out for yourself, my lad.
You were born with all that the great have had,
With your equipment they all began,
Get hold of yourself and say: "I can".

The minute you start talking about what you're going to do if you lose, you have lost.

Grantland Rice
Grantland Rice was one of the greatest sports writers of all time. Here is a small sample of his work. They just don't write like this any more.
A white streak left Babe Ruth's 52 ounce bludgeon in the third inning of yesterday's game at the Yankee Stadium. On a low line it sailed, like a silver flame, through the gray, bleak April shadows, and into the right field bleachers. And as the crash sounded, and the white flash followed, fans arose en masse.....in the greatest vocal cataclysm baseball has ever known.
- Grantland Rice, New york Tribune, April 19, 1923, describing the first home run in Yankee Stadium's inaugural game, April 18, 1923, as the Yankees defeated Boston 4-1.

Be In Charge Of Your Attitude
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past....we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude....I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you....we are in charge of our attitudes.

Thought For The Day
Fear less, hope more; Eat less, chew more; Whine less, breathe more; Talk less, say more; Hate less, love more; and all good things are yours.

The Blog Is Back
We're back after three perfect days in Maine. We celebrated our 34th anniversary and charged our batteries to get ready for a busy Spring and Summer. "Changes in latitude, changes in attitude". The weather was as good as it can get for this time of the year. L.L. Bean has added on to their store, so it's bigger and better than ever.
We took a drive up to Friendship, Maine, right on the water, to look at a potential summer rental property. It didn't work out as a rental, but the area was beautiful. The harbor in Freindship might be the prettiest harbor I've ever seen in Maine, even this early in the year, and I've seen a lot of them. It's a very busy lobstering harbor. It must be spectacular in the Summer.
Now it's time to concentrate on the Dennis Road Race, my new walking group, and some other projects. Unfortunately, some of the old problems still remain to be solved, but we'll work on those.
